1 NOTE Rucker was generally considered to be a kind father to his children.  Jos. Maurice Filiatrea
2 CONC u claimed that Rucker never spanked him or had a cross word for him.  Rucker bought his far
2 CONC m from his father in law, Blandford.  Apparently, Rucker was an astute businessman, and was f
2 CONC airly well off.  He helped people out financially during the depression.
2 CONT Rucker and his wife Josie were both very religious Catholics.
2 CONT According to Maurice Filiatreau, during the Civil War, Rucker was held down by a Confederat
2 CONC e Soldier at one point.  He was unsure whether the soldier would run him through with his bay
2 CONC onette or not.

2 CONT Apparently, the Filiatreaus drank alcohol liberally.

2 CONT According to Maurice, the Filiatreaus were fairly egalitarian in regard to African Americans
2 CONC .  At one point in the interview, Arthur Kelly asked him if any black folks helped Josie arou
2 CONC nd the house during her illness.  Maurice corrected him and said the neighbors, black and whi
2 CONC te, helped out.
2 CONT Later, he also stated that they when he was young, they would go to dances in peoples' parlor

4 CONT Legend has it that Isaac Nazarre Filiatreau, the first of his surname to settle in Washingto
4 CONC n County, had been "stolen" as a child and packed off to Kentucky from Quebec.  This romanti
4 CONC c tale has not been substantiated, but the little that is known about "Nazarre" (or Nazaire
4 CONC " or Nazarie") suggests that it is plausible.  He told census officials he was born in Canad
4 CONC a on March 20, 1809.  He told his children that their forebears had crossed the water from Al
4 CONC sace, France.  His 1840 marriage, in Washington County, apparently was the first occasion t
4 CONC o warrant the recording of his name.
4 CONT 	Nazarre married Belinda Hayes (Brent), the daughter of John and Dina Hayes; she was 28 year
4 CONC s old and had a son, John Brent, b y a previous (1830) marriage to John G. Brent.  She and Na
4 CONC zarre had seven children: William Thomas, born in 1841, Columbus Rucker (1842), Robert Peyto
4 CONC n (1844), Anna Jane (1846), Isabel (1848), Nazariah Augustine ("Nat") (1849) and James Frankl
4 CONC in Pierce (1853-the year Franklin Pierce became the nation's 14th president, presumably wit
4 CONC h Nazarre's backing).
4 CONT 	Some records refer to Nazarre's wife as "Malinda".  Curiously, both names-Belinda and Malind
4 CONC a-reappear among the names given to the children of Columbus Rucker Filiatreau.
4 CONT 	Nazarre died on Dec. 30, 1898, at age 90, and was buried in St. Rose Cemetery.	
4 CONT 	Two of his sons, Columbus Rucker ("Ruck") and William Thomas ("Bill"), joined the Union Arm
4 CONC y together in 1861.  Bill was soon discharged because of illness, but Ruck saw action in a ho
4 CONC st of civil War battles.
4 CONT 	Early in the war, his Company K of the Tenth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry chased John Hunt Mo
4 CONC rgan away from the L&N Railroad.  During its three-year existence, the Tenth Volunteers saw a
4 CONC ction at Mission Ridge, Jonesboro, Corinth, Rolling Fork, Hoover's Gap, Fairfield, Tullahoma
4 CONC , Compton's Creek, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Chattahoochie River, Vining's Station, Pickett'
4 CONC s Mills, Courtland, Perryville, Lookout Mountain, Bunker Hill, Mills Spring, Little Gettysbur
4 CONC g, and Chickamauga; some units marched across Georgia with Gen. William Sherman.  Of the 99 m
4 CONC en who joined Company K with the Filiatreau brothers, seven were killed in action and nine ot
4 CONC hers died while in uniform.
4 CONT 	Ruck, a battlefield nurse who drove a horse-drawn ambulance, was shot in the heel at Perryvi
4 CONC lle.  He won several decorations and was discharged as a vice corporal in 1864.
4 CONT 	Ironically, when he died nearly 70 years later, the cause of death was a foot infection.  I
4 CONC f it had to do with his old heel wound (one source has it that the fatal infection started i
4 CONC n a toe), he may have been the last casualty of the Civil War.
4 CONT 	Only a few stories of the War have survived in family lore: How Ruck and a handful of comrad
4 CONC es saved themselves hiding in the corn shocks while Morgan's cavalrymen passed so close by th
4 CONC ey could have reached out and patted their horses; how they slept on bar ground and often awo
4 CONC ke to find their hair frozen to the mud; how they cheated starvation by living on kernels o
4 CONC f corn picked out of horse manure.
4 CONT 	Ruck was born on June 7, August 4 or August 7, 1842, in the Manton section of Washington Cou
4 CONC nty.  IN 1873, he married Josepha Alemany "Josie" Blandford, the seventh child of Thomas R. a
4 CONC nd Susan Caroline (Tennelly) Blandford.
4 CONT 	The record tells only that Josie was born on Jan.13, 1850, bore 10 children and died in 1916
4 CONC , of tuberculosis.  Of the record, she is said to have been worm, wise, generous and resource
4 CONC ful.  Her name evokes reverence in the family even today, 75 years after her death.
4 CONT 	(Ruck's brother Nat married Frances Blandford, Josie's sister.  By the time of the 1870 Cens
4 CONC us, their older brother Bill had married a woman identified only as "Sary" and had fathered t
4 CONC wo daughters.  The record is silent on the others.)
4 CONT 	Ruck prospered as a blacksmith, mule breeder and land trader in the years after the Civil Wa
4 CONC r.  When he died, at age 90, he left each of his surviving three sons and six daughters a pri
4 CONC ncely sum - almost $10,000.
4 CONT 	One of his sons, Francis Xavier ("Zave") Filiatreau, had borrowed against and spent the bul
4 CONC k of his inheritance - about $7,000 of it - by the time of his father's death.  He wasted lit
4 CONC tle time squandering the rest on a resort hotel in New Hope, whose future as a tourist trap h
4 CONC e had overestimated (to the unending displeasure of his humorless wife, the former Ida Mae Co
4 CONC tton).  Eventually Zave moved his family to Louisville.
4 CONT 	Ruck's oldest son, Joseph Maurice, stayed at home, farming the family land on the banks of t
4 CONC he Beech Fork River not far from the Burg.  "Maurice" and his wife, the former Fannie Logsdon
4 CONC , lived in a hilltop home that burned down after a gas explosion two decades ago.  Their gran
4 CONC dchildren farm the land today.
4 CONT 	The third son, Raymond Nazarre, trained as a podiatrist, served in the Army Medical Corps du
4 CONC ring World War I and eventually resettled in Elwood Ind.
4 CONT 	Two daughters joined the Dominican religious order.  Presumably Ida Etta was happy to be ren
4 CONC amed Laurentia, while Caroline Belinda ("Caralinda") may have been less happy to become Rose
4 CONC , since she had a sister named Rose.
4 CONT 	The other sister (not Sister) Rose (actually Rosaline) married Lee Willett and lived in an
4 CONC d around the Burg (Fredericktown).  Nancy Malinda ("Aunt Nancy"), blinded in her youth by a m
4 CONC edication used to treat an eye infection, never married; she used her inheritance to live i
4 CONC n relative independence in various Catholic institutions.  Mary Joseph ("Mary Jo") married Be
4 CONC nedict Clements of Lebanon.  A seventh sister died just three days after her birth, to agin
4 CONC g parents, in 1895; she was given a touching, powerful name: Josie Rucker.
4 CONT 	Ruck died on June 2, 1933, at a relative's home in Louisville. The Springfield Sun said he d
4 CONC ied of "complications following a foot infection, with which he was stricken in October of la
4 CONC st year."  IN its obituary, the Sun remembered Ruck, "one of this county's wealthiest and mos
4 CONC t successful farmers and stockmen, "as a man who never turned his back on a friend "in financ
4 CONC ial stress or other need."
4 CONT 	He was buried with full military honors in St. Rose Cemetery, next to his good wife.

4 CONT Yours of the 5th received glad to hear from you and you seemed to be satisfied.  You wanted t
4 CONC o know what part of the line our regiment was in. I belonged to the 10th Ky inf 14th army cor
4 CONC ps comanded by Gen G. H. Thomas. We always called him Pap (Pop?) Thomas. I remember Rossvill
4 CONC e and Ringold.  We camped at Ringold a few days after the Battle at James borough below Atlan
4 CONC ta. Our term of service had expired was sent back to Ringold to guard the place. Whilst ther
4 CONC e it was reported we was ordered to pack and we marched to Chatanooga that night and marche
4 CONC d back the next morning.  So it was a false report.  I don't know who comanded our Division a
4 CONC t that time. Our Brigade was composed of the following regiments: the 10th Ind the 74th Ind 1
4 CONC 4 Ohio & 4th Ky & the 10th Ky.  I dont recolect the names of the fields and woods we fought o
4 CONC ver but I know we were first going forward and then back for the two days.  I know we layed a
4 CONC t the chick(?) Springs the night after the first days battle and the next night fell back t
4 CONC o Chattanoga and staid there for about 2 mo and liked to have starved. The enymy had our gru
4 CONC b line cut off.  Sherman came to our asisstance and we marched out up mission Ridge & Lookou
4 CONC t Mountain and cleaned the [Reb?] off and after that we got plinty of grub.  The ballance o
4 CONC f the war Sherman took comand of the army and kept everything going and coming.  I guess thi
4 CONC s will give you some idea of where we was.  You never said anything about Veave in your lette
4 CONC r.  What has become of her & the children.  I have never heard a word from them nor you sinc

1 NOTE Mary Filiatreau said that Zave was a funny man.  He loved to play pranks.  He was a guard a
2 CONC t a distillery.
2 CONT Mary had to stay with Zave and Ida after Ida fell and broke her hip. This was an experience t
2 CONC hat would try the patience of Zave and Mary.  Ida was very demanding.  Mary got very little t
2 CONC o eat because Ida always had to know what she was doing.
2 CONT During that time, Zave was in charge of cooking.  He would cook a ham on Sunday, and they wou
2 CONC ld eat that ham during the week until it was just about gone.  Then they would eat ham salad
2 CONC .  Mary got really sick of ham during that time.
2 CONT 
2 CONT For years, Zave had a dirty joke that he wanted to tell to Libby Clark. Every time he starte
2 CONC d to tell her, Ida would yell at him, and he would shut up.  When Ida died, Zave told his dir
2 CONC ty joke to Libby Clark at the funeral home.  Libby told Mary Filiatreau that the joke was REA
2 CONC LLY dirty! Neither Zave nor Libby told the joke to Mary. It was probably too dirty for her.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Joseph Maurice Filiatreau didn't speak very enthusiastically about Zave.  He said that Zave w
2 CONC as a good worker until he got to be about 18 years old, then he slowed down.  He moved to Lou
2 CONC isville and never did any good there. He may have reflected some disappointment Rucker may ha
2 CONC ve had with Zave.  In the first codicil to Rucker's will, he changed the executor from Raymon
2 CONC d, Zave and Maurice Filiatreau to just Maurice alone. The reason is not stated.

1 NOTE By all accounts, Sister Laurentia was a fun person. Joseph Maurice Filiatreau, in an intervie
2 CONC w taken by Arthur Kelly, said that she loved to pull pranks on other people.

2 CONT Once she came back from the convent to visit her father and family. She got home when no on
2 CONC e else was around.  She dressed up in men's clothing and walked out to find her father.  He l
2 CONC ooked up and didn't know who she was.

2 CONT One time she decided that she would needle a racist nun at the convent.  She made herself u
2 CONC p in black face and walked up to the nun.  She proceeded to "give her a good talking to".
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mary Bruce Filiatreau also remembers Sister Laurentia's mischief.  She remembers that one yea
2 CONC r, her students bought her a pair of red tights.  She put them on and danced around the class
2 CONC room.

2 CONT One time at the convent, the nuns were preparing dinner.  Sister Laurentia got hungry and sto
2 CONC le a corn cob from the table.  She put it in her pocket.  She got in trouble for stealing foo
2 CONC d and for messing up her habit.

2 CONT Her sister, Sister Rose was often irritated by Sister Laurentia's antics.  Sister Rose was mo

3 CONC reau DPM, son of  Dr. Raymond N. Filiatreau MD. As you know Raymond was the son of Rucker.

3 CONT My husband and I have  enjoyed reading your genealogy.  He has tried for years to trace the f
3 CONC amily beyond Canada with no luck.  I  want to let you know that your genealogy says that Raym
3 CONC ond was a podiatrist, actually, Raymond was an MD, a general practitioner, who practiced medi
3 CONC cine in Ind.and my father-in-law Conroy was the podiatrist.  We enjoyed the letter that you p
3 CONC rinted from Raymond to Rucker regarding the Civil War, how did you come upon the letter and d

3 CONT My mother-in-law has a terrific memory for someone who is 90 and remembers Srs. Rose and Laur
3 CONC entia very well and also has some stories about them.  One my husband remembers was when he a
3 CONC nd his parents went to Ark. for his uncle's ordination. (This is Edward Filiatreau, another o
3 CONC f Raymond's son's who is a Benedictine Monk.)  My husband was about 8 or 9 yrs old and playe
3 CONC d the violin.  He was asked to bring it along to give a "concert" to the 40 or so Filiatreau
3 CONC s attending the ordination.  He was playing a lively tune when Sr. Laurentia, in the back o
3 CONC f the room, began to dance around, and my husband started to laugh so hard he had to stop pla
3 CONC ying.

3 CONT We have a very nice 4x6 hard board photo of Raymond, Rucker and Nazarre.  It has no date bu
3 CONC t we are guessing it was taken shortly before Nazaire's death, we think.  The interesting thi
3 CONC ng is that the photographers name on the back of the photo says, H. Archambautt 2204 Rue Notr
3 CONC e-Dame Montreal.  We know Nazarre died in KY but he obviously was in Canada sometime in his l
3 CONC ater years.  My in-laws received the photo from Fannie Bell Filiatreau.  If you would lik

5 CONT The funeral Mass was said at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Fr
5 CONC edericktown for Joseph Maurice Filiatreau, interment following in St. Rose Church Cemetery.
5 CONT 	Mr. Filiatreau died in his sleep Thursday morning, April 4, at his residence at Howardstow
5 CONC n and the body was brought to and rested at Hale & Polin Funeral Home in Springfield.  He wa
5 CONC s in his 84th year, a retired farmer and landowner in the Fredericktown community of this cou
5 CONC nty.
5 CONT 	Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cora Howard Filiatreau; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joseph A. Filia
5 CONC treau, Fredericktown; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces an
5 CONC d nephews.  His parents, Columbus and Josephine Blandford Filiatreau, preceded him in death m
5 CONC any hears ago.  Other survivors include six step-daughters and two step-sons.

1 NOTE Joseph Maurice Filiatreau remembered growing up on the farm with his father.  He said he work
2 CONC ed really hard for his dad.  He also hunted and trapped animals for pelts.  He said that th
2 CONC e family raised livestock on the farm.
2 CONT He said when he went courting, he would get in his horse and buggy and ride from Fredericktow
2 CONC n to Howardtown to see his sweetheart.  He would get there about 11 p.m., and he wouldn't ge
2 CONC t back home until daylight.

2 CONT He said that they would often go to dances in people's parlors.  The music would be provide
2 CONC d by "colored musicians" and sometimes white musicians, if they knew how to play.

3 CONC f Raymond's son's who is a Benedictine Monk.)  My husband was about 8 or 9 yrs old and playe

2 CONT Legend has it that Isaac Nazarre Filiatreau, the first of his surname to settle in Washingto
2 CONC n County, had been "stolen" as a child and packed off to Kentucky from Quebec.  This romanti
2 CONC c tale has not been substantiated, but the little that is known about "Nazarre" (or Nazaire
2 CONC " or Nazarie") suggests that it is plausible.  He told census officials he was born in Canad
2 CONC a on March 20, 1809.  He told his children that their forebears had crossed the water from Al
2 CONC sace, France.  His 1840 marriage, in Washington County, apparently was the first occasion t
2 CONC o warrant the recording of his name.
2 CONT 	Nazarre married Belinda Hayes (Brent), the daughter of John and Dina Hayes; she was 28 year
2 CONC s old and had a son, John Brent, b y a previous (1830) marriage to John G. Brent.  She and Na
2 CONC zarre had seven children: William Thomas, born in 1841, Columbus Rucker (1842), Robert Peyto
2 CONC n (1844), Anna Jane (1846), Isabel (1848), Nazariah Augustine ("Nat") (1849) and James Frankl
2 CONC in Pierce (1853-the year Franklin Pierce became the nation's 14th president, presumably wit
2 CONC h Nazarre's backing).
2 CONT 	Some records refer to Nazarre's wife as "Malinda".  Curiously, both names-Belinda and Malind
2 CONC a-reappear among the names given to the children of Columbus Rucker Filiatreau.
2 CONT 	Nazarre died on Dec. 30, 1898, at age 90, and was buried in St. Rose Cemetery.	
2 CONT 	Two of his sons, Columbus Rucker ("Ruck") and William Thomas ("Bill"), joined the Union Arm
2 CONC y together in 1861.  Bill was soon discharged because of illness, but Ruck saw action in a ho
2 CONC st of civil War battles.
2 CONT 	Early in the war, his Company K of the Tenth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry chased John Hunt Mo
2 CONC rgan away from the L&N Railroad.  During its three-year existence, the Tenth Volunteers saw a
2 CONC ction at Mission Ridge, Jonesboro, Corinth, Rolling Fork, Hoover's Gap, Fairfield, Tullahoma
2 CONC , Compton's Creek, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Chattahoochie River, Vining's Station, Pickett'
2 CONC s Mills, Courtland, Perryville, Lookout Mountain, Bunker Hill, Mills Spring, Little Gettysbur
2 CONC g, and Chickamauga; some units marched across Georgia with Gen. William Sherman.  Of the 99 m
2 CONC en who joined Company K with the Filiatreau brothers, seven were killed in action and nine ot
2 CONC hers died while in uniform.
2 CONT 	Ruck, a battlefield nurse who drove a horse-drawn ambulance, was shot in the heel at Perryvi
2 CONC lle.  He won several decorations and was discharged as a vice corporal in 1864.
2 CONT 	Ironically, when he died nearly 70 years later, the cause of death was a foot infection.  I
2 CONC f it had to do with his old heel wound (one source has it that the fatal infection started i
2 CONC n a toe), he may have been the last casualty of the Civil War.
2 CONT 	Only a few stories of the War have survived in family lore: How Ruck and a handful of comrad
2 CONC es saved themselves hiding in the corn shocks while Morgan's cavalrymen passed so close by th
2 CONC ey could have reached out and patted their horses; how they slept on bar ground and often awo
2 CONC ke to find their hair frozen to the mud; how they cheated starvation by living on kernels o
2 CONC f corn picked out of horse manure.
2 CONT 	Ruck was born on June 7, August 4 or August 7, 1842, in the Manton section of Washington Cou
2 CONC nty.  IN 1873, he married Josepha Alemany "Josie" Blandford, the seventh child of Thomas R. a
2 CONC nd Susan Caroline (Tennelly) Blandford.
2 CONT 	The record tells only that Josie was born on Jan.13, 1850, bore 10 children and died in 1916
2 CONC , of tuberculosis.  Of the record, she is said to have been worm, wise, generous and resource
2 CONC ful.  Her name evokes reverence in the family even today, 75 years after her death.
2 CONT 	(Ruck's brother Nat married Frances Blandford, Josie's sister.  By the time of the 1870 Cens
2 CONC us, their older brother Bill had married a woman identified only as "Sary" and had fathered t
2 CONC wo daughters.  The record is silent on the others.)
2 CONT 	Ruck prospered as a blacksmith, mule breeder and land trader in the years after the Civil Wa
2 CONC r.  When he died, at age 90, he left each of his surviving three sons and six daughters a pri
2 CONC ncely sum - almost $10,000.
2 CONT 	One of his sons, Francis Xavier ("Zave") Filiatreau, had borrowed against and spent the bul
2 CONC k of his inheritance - about $7,000 of it - by the time of his father's death.  He wasted lit
2 CONC tle time squandering the rest on a resort hotel in New Hope, whose future as a tourist trap h
2 CONC e had overestimated (to the unending displeasure of his humorless wife, the former Ida Mae Co
2 CONC tton).  Eventually Zave moved his family to Louisville.
2 CONT 	Ruck's oldest son, Joseph Maurice, stayed at home, farming the family land on the banks of t
2 CONC he Beech Fork River not far from the Burg.  "Maurice" and his wife, the former Fannie Logsdon
2 CONC , lived in a hilltop home that burned down after a gas explosion two decades ago.  Their gran
2 CONC dchildren farm the land today.
2 CONT 	The third son, Raymond Nazarre, trained as a podiatrist, served in the Army Medical Corps du
2 CONC ring World War I and eventually resettled in Elwood Ind.
2 CONT 	Two daughters joined the Dominican religious order.  Presumably Ida Etta was happy to be ren
2 CONC amed Laurentia, while Caroline Belinda ("Caralinda") may have been less happy to become Rose
2 CONC , since she had a sister named Rose.
2 CONT 	The other sister (not Sister) Rose (actually Rosaline) married Lee Willett and lived in an
2 CONC d around the Burg (Fredericktown).  Nancy Malinda ("Aunt Nancy"), blinded in her youth by a m
2 CONC edication used to treat an eye infection, never married; she used her inheritance to live i
2 CONC n relative independence in various Catholic institutions.  Mary Joseph ("Mary Jo") married Be
2 CONC nedict Clements of Lebanon.  A seventh sister died just three days after her birth, to agin
2 CONC g parents, in 1895; she was given a touching, powerful name: Josie Rucker.
2 CONT 	Ruck died on June 2, 1933, at a relative's home in Louisville. The Springfield Sun said he d
2 CONC ied of "complications following a foot infection, with which he was stricken in October of la
2 CONC st year."  IN its obituary, the Sun remembered Ruck, "one of this county's wealthiest and mos
2 CONC t successful farmers and stockmen, "as a man who never turned his back on a friend "in financ
2 CONC ial stress or other need."

2 CONT Yours of the 5th received glad to hear from you and you seemed to be satisfied.  You wanted t
2 CONC o know what part of the line our regiment was in. I belonged to the 10th Ky inf 14th army cor
2 CONC ps comanded by Gen G. H. Thomas. We always called him Pap (Pop?) Thomas. I remember Rossvill
2 CONC e and Ringold.  We camped at Ringold a few days after the Battle at James borough below Atlan
2 CONC ta. Our term of service had expired was sent back to Ringold to guard the place. Whilst ther
2 CONC e it was reported we was ordered to pack and we marched to Chatanooga that night and marche
2 CONC d back the next morning.  So it was a false report.  I don't know who comanded our Division a
2 CONC t that time. Our Brigade was composed of the following regiments: the 10th Ind the 74th Ind 1
2 CONC 4 Ohio & 4th Ky & the 10th Ky.  I dont recolect the names of the fields and woods we fought o
2 CONC ver but I know we were first going forward and then back for the two days.  I know we layed a
2 CONC t the chick(?) Springs the night after the first days battle and the next night fell back t
2 CONC o Chattanoga and staid there for about 2 mo and liked to have starved. The enymy had our gru
2 CONC b line cut off.  Sherman came to our asisstance and we marched out up mission Ridge & Lookou
2 CONC t Mountain and cleaned the [Reb?] off and after that we got plinty of grub.  The ballance o
2 CONC f the war Sherman took comand of the army and kept everything going and coming.  I guess thi
2 CONC s will give you some idea of where we was.  You never said anything about Veave in your lette
